Many car hire-purchase contracts show interest using a flat rate, which calculates interest from the original principal over the contract term. A flat rate therefore cannot be compared directly with an effective rate, which is based on the outstanding balance. The Bank of Thailand recommends comparing rates on the same basis and including other costs.
The linked video discusses clearing debt in general; it does not describe hire-purchase contracts or a car-loan settlement formula. This guide relies on the Bank of Thailand’s explanations and rules.
Get a settlement quote before transferring a lump sum
- Request a written settlement calculation for the date you plan to pay, and ask when the quote expires.
- Ask for separate line items showing remaining principal, unearned interest, the early-settlement rebate and fees.
- Ask whether payment must be made in full or whether a partial extra payment is allowed, and how it affects the contract.
- Compare the total amount due if you continue installments with the settlement amount today, using figures from the lender.
- Keep proof of settlement and check the ownership-transfer documents after the balance is paid.
The Bank of Thailand’s rules for car hire-purchase and leasing began applying to contracts with individuals using a vehicle for personal purposes on December 3, 2025. For contracts signed before that date, check the original contract terms. Do not automatically apply a rebate example for a new contract to an older one.
Paying off the car may not be suitable if it uses up your emergency savings or you have higher-cost debt. Compare rates in the Effective Rate guide and list all installments with the DSR guide.
