Wat Phrathat Pha Ngao

History
The temple is in Ban Sop Kham, Wiang Subdistrict, and is believed to have been an important temple during the Yonok Kingdom. Formerly called Wat Sop Kham, it stood beside the Mekong River and was almost entirely destroyed by the current. A new temple was later built. In B.E. 2519 (1976), the grounds were regraded and a Buddha image estimated to be 700–1,300 years old was discovered. It was named “Luang Pho Pha Ngao.” “Pha Ngao” means the shadow of a large rock or cliff. The rock is large and shaped like a stupa; when sunlight passes over it, it casts a large shadow, which led local people to call it “Phra That Pha Ngao.”
