The temple was formerly called Wat Chan Lok, also known locally as Chan Ta Lok, before its name changed to Wat Chan Lok Klang Wiang. The name Klang Wiang reflects its role as the centre of Chiang Rai during that period. The site is also identified as the “navel of Chiang Rai.”
