Wat Bot

History
Wat Bot dates from the Ayutthaya period and was renovated on 11 April 1882. The old Ayutthaya-period ubosot (ordination hall), respected by local residents, follows a traditional style called “Mahaut,” with no openings in the side walls except one door. Renovation changed some original features, including the door arch and window frames; the front door and two windows on each side are the features still identified as Ayutthaya-style art. The hall is surrounded by double sandstone boundary stones in a Chinese style. Behind it is a stupa that has not been restored and is so dilapidated that its original structure is difficult to make out. It resembles stupas commonly built in the Ayutthaya period, with a square relic chamber, 16 indented corners, and projecting niches on all four sides. The eastern side was made into a large chamber, but it was secretly excavated and left damaged. Many red and grey sandstone Buddha images, with lap widths of 0.30 to 1 metre, were also found. Their artistic style dates them to the 15th–17th centuries.
