Wat Sai

History
Wat Sai is in Village No. 5, Chi Nam Rai Subdistrict. It was formerly called Wat Thayan, a name said to have evolved from Thai Yan. According to local legend, a wandering monk found the abandoned temple surrounded by banyan trees and suggested the name Wat Sai. It is believed to date to the Ayutthaya period. Bodhi-tree roots surround the walls of the ordination hall, where the principal Buddha image is enshrined. The image was once called Luang Pho Khao or Luang Pho Thayan and is now known as Luang Pho Wat Sai. Local people recount that enemy soldiers stripped away its gold covering, leaving a plaster figure, and severed its head; villagers later pooled money to restore it.
