A beneficiary is the person named in an insurance policy to receive benefits under the policy’s terms when a covered event occurs. Choose and review beneficiary details alongside the coverage itself; do not rely on verbal instructions or an old document that may not match the current policy.
What to check when setting or changing a beneficiary
- Check the policy schedule for the insured person, premium payer, and named beneficiary.
- Verify each person’s name, identification details, relationship, and share against the policy documents.
- Ask the insurer how to change a beneficiary, name a contingent beneficiary, and submit the required documents.
- Review the details after marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, or the death of a beneficiary.
- Keep a copy of the change request and the insurer’s confirmation. Sending a request does not by itself confirm that the change has taken effect.
The Office of Insurance Commission publishes a public guide to life insurance and sample general policy conditions. The policy wording matters; confirm how a benefit will be paid under the actual policy and applicable law.
