Brown rice is a whole grain with more fiber than refined rice, but older adults do not need to force themselves to eat it if it causes discomfort or makes it harder to eat enough. Feeling bloated after a meal does not by itself prove an illness or an allergy to brown rice.
Brown rice and digestion as we age
Brown rice retains more of the bran and germ than refined rice, so it contains more fiber. Whether it suits someone depends on portion size and the rest of the meal; choosing one type of rice does not determine whether an overall diet is healthy.
If increasing fiber causes bloating, try adding it gradually, drink fluids within any health-related limits, and adjust the portion or cooking method. Seek medical advice for severe pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath, or symptoms that recur or worsen instead of assuming they are a normal part of aging.
People with diabetes may need to account for carbohydrates. Some stages of chronic kidney disease involve dietary considerations based on lab results, so consult a dietitian before making major changes to meals.
Practical ways to adjust
- Increase fiber gradually and note how you feel after meals.
- Consider portion size and the foods served with the rice instead of judging by rice type alone.
- Consult your care team if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or warning symptoms.
